Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From my media products, I had researched into the different conventions and forms and had decided upon a select few in which I would develop and challenge;

-Costumes in Jazz history have all been suit and tie for representing the past, and shirt and trousers for the youth to show difference. So I decided to swap this around and make sure that my young male model wore a suit and that my older male model wore shirt and trousers. This gives the impression of a mergence of old and new to try and make sure that there is no difference in age and that all jazz players are the same.

-The masthead traditionally is roughly 1/4 of the page in size, I did succeed, but I did use a banner to make sure that I could experiment with the different fonts to improve the style of the masthead.

-Conventional Colours for jazz magazines are blue, yellow, black, white, and red. I have broken this convention by using the colours green and purple.

-The only other convention which was broken would be the photo convention. This was the convention of only having one person in the photo at once. This is because the target audience is young and from my research I found that people prefer to see magazines which are printed with multiple people on the front page.

Overall, I believe I have manipulated each convention so that it would be useful as some of my desires for this magazine had issues due to the conventions and such being quite strict. I believe it was the right choice for me break a few of these conventions as it gave me enough freedom to alter the magazine to be the best it could possibly and my target audience research states that they have taken to the idea of green and purple very well.

If I were to change anything, it would be the fonts and colour scheme. I do like the fonts and colours used, but I have to admit that I am not a huge fan and the fonts aren't quite what I had in mind.
